I too signed up for msn.com just to preserve my default email id with msn too.
Email is becoming mobile now. Most of the new mobile devices have good buil in email clients.
Gmail still remains the pioneer. Infact google account has got many more features which helps our day to day life be on track.
Gmail now supports microsoft exchange protocol. It is a protocol initially developed by microsoft and being used extensively in office and corporate setup. In a nutshell, it is an integrated solution to provide email, calendar, contacts, tasks etc to your desktop usually in microsoft outlook (and now in mobiles too).
So if you are looking for a free portal for all your email, contacts, tasks and schedule and calendar - Google account is what you need. (Google calendar is far more superior to any other free online or desktop calendar.)
I shall try to explain a litle bit more.
Consider the scenario.
1. You want to check your mails at home on your desktop, on your mobile on the move or your computer at office. You also want everything to be in synchrony everywhere.
2. You are a busy person and can't carry a paper diary or has the habit of losing diaries. You also want to check your spouse's or kids schedule. You want to add and view appointments at home, on the move and in the office, but want to keep a single calendar which is in synchrony with all the devices all the time
3. You want to get email on the mobile instantly when somebody sends it to you (push email)
4. You don't want to pay a single paisa or penny or cent and still want a professional service.
Then gmail / google account is the answer.
How to set it up:
On PC (at home or office)
Just go online in a browser and check gmail or calendar. You can also setup microsoft outlook in exchange client mode.
On mobile:
Nokia - newer N series, E series and the Xpress music versions have got a programme mail for exchange and you can set it with gmail account. You will be able to sync your nokia mobile calendar and contacts with your google account.
Iphone - Supports exchange. Iphone calendar is very easy to use and syncs instantly with google calendar and mail.
Windows mobile - Has built in exchange and pocket outlook.
Blackberry - I have no personal experience. But I believe it has got exchange support.
Android - It is google product anyway..
Not sure about other mobiles.
